Quintin Bart is a versatile instrumentalist and composer with an evocative sound and expressive musicality. Playing the hurdy-gurdy, double bass, and jazz Manouche guitar, Quintin’s performances draw on formal studies in jazz and European folk traditions. He collaborates with Manitoban ensembles including Casati, Raine Hamilton String Trio, Matt Foster, Swing de mes rêves, Zoot Suit, Woody Holler, Grant Simpson, Anna Hull, and the Bart House Band. He is regularly featured as guest guitarist with Juvel.
Following a degree with honours in jazz double bass performance (University of Manitoba), in 2010 Quintin relocated to Budapest to learn from and perform with the great Romani troupe, Romano Glaszo. Delving deep into Romani musical traditions, Quintin returned to the Winnipeg music scene with an inspired ear and a new instrument – the enigmatic and unusual hurdy gurdy.
In 2017, he returned to Europe on a hurdy gurdy pilgrimage, learning from the masters; Matthias Loibner, Tobie Miller, and Nigel Eaton. In 2022, Quintin’s hurdy gurdy playing was featured in the Manitoba Theatre Company production of “The Three Musketeers.” He has collaborated with Vancouver harpist Janelle Nadeau, Flora Luna, Rayannah, and Juno awarded Steve Bell, among others.
Quintin offers private lessons and high school clinics in double bass, hurdy gurdy, and guitar for all levels. He also offers transcription and arrangement services, with a specialty in string parts.
Quintin is currently performing The Oroboro Vignettes, an original series of neo-Baroque chamber works for hurdy gurdy, violin, cello, trumpet, and double bass. The quintet sound is seeped in expressive and luscious dreamscapes, blossoming with melodies reminiscent of Slavic folksong and old world fiddle tunes.
